On behalf of Doual’art, we are happy to invite you to the reception and presentation All about SUD 2010, on Friday 11th of June, at 17:00 in the auditorium of TENT./Witte de With, center for contemporary art, in Rotterdam.

Doual'art will present the ambitions and projects for the SUD, Salon Urban Douala 2010, which is a triennial urban international art manifestation in the quarters of Douala, the biggest port in western Africa.
Topic of the SUD is aimed at the search for concrete urban problems and the cooperation between artists, communities, architects, urbanists, writers, designers and curators. The theme of this year’s SUD is “water in context of the city” which has been the subject of preparatory research over the past 3 years.

The presentation of Doual'art is followed by a guest presentation, held by RAW foundation. In a wider collaboration named RAW Studios, the architects Calanne Moroney and Bart-Jan Hooft have been working in South Africa, investigation and experimenting on new ways of building. They will show some of their projects and experiments.

In 2007 a structural and long-term cooperation between Doual’art and foundation iStrike was initiated, developing mutual programs, workshops and exhibitions, and the book “Douala in Translation”, that was published at Episode Publishers that same year. Since 2009, this cooperation with Doual’art is continued by Kamiel Verschuren and Xandra Nibbeling as foundation Studio NL 01.08.04
Kamiel Verschuren (visual artists) is involved in the preparations and production of the SUD. Freelance communications consultant and editor Xandra Nibbeling is involved in the organization and communications.

Doual'art is a non-profit organisation founded in 1991 in Douala, Cameroon. It sees itself as an experimental laboratory for new urban practices of African cities. It addresses freedom of expression and social cohesion through cultural and artistic productions. Doual'art introduces a participatory approach in cultural practice, discussing and negotiating with local communities, NGOs and authorities their needs and aspirations and involving artists as facilitators of the development processes.
In 1991, doual'art started an outdoor programme with public art, urban interventions and social engineering projects implemented in several neighbourhoods of the city Douala. "espace doual'art" – the exhibition space of doual'art – was created in 1995. It hosts exhibitions, performing art events, conferences, seminars and a residency programme.
For 16 years doual'art has been developing its own methodology and approach of intervening on Douala, by combining competencies in contemporary art with social/economic development. The two elements of artistic quality and social impact have always been considered by doual'art as central and essential to their work: art projects have been chosen for their artistic quality and the location, function, priority and theme have always been discussed with communities involved and selected to have a social impact.
