Aether: Tones and Talks #09 Featuring
Gareth Davis, Kleefstra Bros, Bela Emerson and Bob Rusche.
This edition of Aether features a lot of collaboration, with our musical guests all working on their
own as well as each others output. From March 16th to 20th Davis|Kleefstra|Kleefstra
together with Bela Emerson shall do a 4-gig tour of The Netherlands, and a radio
session for VPRO Dwars.
Gareth Davis + Kleefstra Bros
Gareth Davis plays clarinets of various shapes and sizes, and on occasion, some other
instruments. Sometimes they sound like clarinets, sometimes not so much. The Kleefstra
Brothers are poet/vocalist Jan and guitarist Romke, who together produce music known
for its earthly simplicity. Davis and the Kleefstra bros have intermittently worked together
over the past few years; their sound is floating yet beset with images of ominous landscapes
and foreboding urban backgrounds.

Bela Emerson
Bela Emerson is an innovative and prolific performer of electric cello, electronics, tenor viol
and musical saw, who creates passionate, evocative and spontaneous music of no definable
genre. Bela’s solo performances are the stuff of legend: intense and exhilarating. Bela has
collaborated and performed with many musicians including Tim Exile, Sten Sandell and
Rhodri Davies. Using an array of electronics, pedals and effects that take the cello beyond
its usual sphere, Bela builds layers of rhythm and sound using every bit of the instrument.
