Aether: Sound Clash! featuring VRIL – Anne Frank Zappa – Jason Coburn
Aether: Tones and Talks is a concert series at Foundation B.a.d, where sound artists/musicians are invited to perform and talk about various aspects informing their work. To mark our first birthday on Feb 18 we present a special edition; Aether: Sound Clash!
The Rules: feature two bands who are both legendary in their own way, and round it all off with a banging DJset. The Acts: VRIL, Anna Frank Zappa, and beats by Aether’s very own Jason Coburn.
Come and join us celebrate Aether’s first year in orbit.
VRIL
VRIL brings together Chris Cutler (Pere Ubu, Henry Cow, Science Group), Alan Jenkins (Thurston Lava Tube, Cordelia), Bob Drake (5uus, Science Group) and Lukas Simonis (Coolhaven, Dull Schicksal). As such, VRIL is something of a supergroup; purveyors of experimental music, whose combined experience spans over a century. We at Aether are thrilled to welcome them because VRIL on tour is a rare thing. Playing without a PA their live set is raw and fervent. For their latest release ‘The Fatal Duckpond’ VRIL invited 15 film makers to create videos for each of the tracks. The splendid results have been compiled into a new DVD release that will be officially, officially, officially launched at this event!!!

Anne Frank Zappa
As the name suggests Anne Frank Zappa is a band with as much love as hate for convention. The project was created by three children of Rotterdam’s underground music-scene: The notorious punk drama-queen Elle Bandita, who personally reinvented Dutch Cockrock, Jerry Hormone, who used to play in the punk band The Apers, and drummer Marcel Wiebenga who used to play in bands such as Oil, Das Oath and renowned stoner octet De Vogels. Two guitars, a drumkit with a whole lot of screaming is all these folks need to get you hot and smokin’. Since there’s no tour-schedule and no future this may be your only chance to see this veteran punk outfit play this decade.

Jason Coburn
Coburn began a diverse creative career as an artist, curator, writer and DJ after studying at London’s Royal College of Art where he received tutelidge from the likes of Brian Eno. His work as a DJ has been influenced by growing up in legendary nightclubs such as the Haçienda (where he first went at the tender age of 15) and London’s notorious acid house parties of the late 80s. Tonight he lays down the gauntlet with a record box full of sparse beats, minimal rhythms and pulsating frequencies.
